HANDKERCHIEFS & SHAWLS

HANDKERCHIEFS & SHAWLS

Worn around the neck, over the head or sometimes in the pocket the handkerchief was an accessory owned by both men & women throughout the 18th century and into the 19th century. Documentation can be found in art, advertisements, museum collections, contemporary writing and of course in the extant survivors themselves. Our handkerchiefs are extensively researched and meticulously designed by Angela of Burnley & Trowbridge. Using traditional methods, we produce each handkerchief in limited quantities to replicate the variety of choice available in the 18th century. Our designs are sold exclusively thru our shop or our Museum partners. Manufactured with a fine hand loomed cotton (unless otherwise noted) they are hand dyed and hand finished.  Being hand dyed, care should be taken when laundering.  We suggest that you wash them separately in cold water by hand.

Historical Note:  We have examined many, many extant 18th century handkerchiefs, and have yet to find one that is perfectly square. Please be advised that the one you receive may not be perfectly square either.
