TRIM YOUR HAT MINI SEW ALONG

Hats were an essential part of an 18th century wardrobe. They were practical as well as fashionable and worn by all socioeconomic levels. They could be simply decorated with a single ribbon or elaborately decorated with silk and trimming techniques. In this video we take you step by step through the process of decorating 3 styles of straw hats suitable for the 1760’s thru the mid 1780’s.

 

Supplies Needed:
  • Straw Hat: Fine Milan Straw Hat, Natural or Black, or Doll Size
  • Ribbon: Silk Taffeta, Paduasoy, or Silk Single Faced Satin
    • Full Size Hat
      • Hat A: 3 yards of 1/2" inch ribbon
      • Hat B: 4 to 5 yards of 1, 1 ¼ or 2 inch ribbon (add 2 yards to bind brim)
      • Hat C: 6 to 12 yards of 2 inch ribbon (add 2 to 4 yards to bind brim) or ½ to 1 yard of silk taffeta fabric hemmed to desired width
    • Doll Size Hat
      • Hat A: ¼” to ½” ribbon (Ties-30 inches; Crown Trim-12 inches)
      • Hat B: ½” ribbon (Ties-30 inches; Crown Trim-18 inches; Brim Binding-27 inches)
      • Hat C: 1¼” ribbon (Ties-30 inches; Crown Trim-27 to 108 inches; Brim Binding-27 to 54 inches)
  • Silk Sewing Thread
  • Thimble
  • Pins/sewing clips
  • Needles: ND3 or ND7 Scissors
  • Optional:
    • Pliers or needle puller
