In run-away ads, portraits, genre art, advertisements and theft reports, we find handkerchiefs of many descriptions, such as our Pink, Red & Parrot Green Handkerchief. They were worn by women and men for fashion and practicality throughout the 18th century and into the 19th century.
The coloring and patterning of this handkerchief is based on several cotton pieces in a pieced bed-hanging in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum. The bed-hanging consisted of hundreds of different prints of cotton and linen/cotton ranging in date from the 1740's to the 1760's.
