"Openwork" designs, centered on the front of the foot rather than the side (such as the one on our Regency Openwork Silk Stockings), began appearing in the early 19th century, and continued until the early 20th century. Designed with elaborate lace patterns and sometimes embellished with embroidery, the style enjoyed long-term popularity. This pattern is based on extant examples, with the design starting at mid calf and moving down to the top of the toe.
