In the 1760’s, various attempts to make an openwork fabric led stocking makers to create what became lace clocks, such as those on our Seamed Lace Clocked Silk Stockings . Lace clocks proved to be very popular, especially with women, so that by the 1780’s lace frame workers making the clocked stockings were paid double that of the plain stocking frame worker. Our stocking is based on several examples in the Museum of Costume and Textiles, Nottingham, England.
