Red, Pink & Blue Sprigged Cotton
Reproduction from the Collection of Mary Doering by Burnley & Trowbridge
By the mid-18th century, printed textiles, such as this Red, Pink & Blue Sprigged Cotton were extremely popular, and could be afforded by all classes. English printers were versatile, and the range of patterns was wide and varied, from one-color prints to multi-colored chintz. Any pattern made in India could find an English counterpart.
This beautiful "sprig'd" print is reproduced from a gown in Mary's collection, dating to around 1800. Its delicate pattern boasts 16 motifs in shades of red, blue and lavender. We have studied flower motifs similar to these, dating to the 1740s. The original textile retains its blue thread selvage, distinguishing it as English.
- Our Red, Pink & Blue Sprigged Cotton is lightweight with a soft, smooth hand and good drape.
- Based on this and similar prints in surviving garments, this print is well-suited to ladies and children's gowns and jackets, accessories, pieced linings and hem bands (as seen in original garments), as well as men's wrapping gowns.
- 100% Cotton, 52 inches wide.
When you purchase this Red, Pink & Blue Sprigged Cotton, a donation will be made to the Humane Rescue Alliance in honor of Mary, who is an avid cat lover!
