Natural Checked Linen Diaper

Linen cloth, such as this Natural Checked Linen Diaper, was woven of flax fiber in many grades and weaves. Used in every aspect of living, from clothing, to household needs, to furnishings, to the shroud made for the corpse, linen was so common that a tax was proposed as a source of easy revenue on the coarser sorts being imported into the US towards the end of the 18th century.

Diaper, a type of dimity, was woven in linen and sometimes linen and cotton.  Typically woven in a diamond pattern with a dot or leaf in the center, it was often used for everyday household linens, and a more elaborate diaper woven with flowers in the center was often used for summer clothing.  It was ordered by Willing & Shapen of Philadelphia as "clouting, napkin and tabling diaper" in the 1730's, but in our research we found examples of it being used for infant clothing, rather than clouting.
Our Natural Checked Linen Diaper is a simple-weave pattern, which was historically less expensive than the more complex harness weaves.
