JP Ryan Pet-en-lair or Robe a la Francaise Pattern
Popular from the 1750's through the 1770's, this jacket was also known as a "short sack" by the English. Originally worn for all types of wear, by the late 70's it was considered a more formal gown. The jacket remained versatile, being made of fine textiles and trims for more formal wear, and stamped or painted cottons for day wear. The JP Ryan Pet-en-lair or Robe a la Francaise Pattern includes pet-en-l'air, sleeve flounces, and stomacher, with directions to extend to gown length, and to make a petticoat suitable for pocket hoops. Two sizes per pattern.
