Red, Yellow & Black Flowered Silk Handkerchief reproduction, from the Collection of Mary Doering by Burnley & Trowbridge

The original of this beautiful silk handkerchief is dated in Mary's collection to 1810. Its block printed pattern has the earmark of earlier and later handkerchiefs of similar style.  The color scheme of this Red, Yellow & Black Flowered Silk Handkerchief is found in extant handkerchiefs as early as 1750 in the John Holker Manuscript, to as late as 1820-50 in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum.  Similar handkerchiefs exist in the collections of the DAR Museum, Colonial Williamsburg Foundation  and the Nordiska Museet.  Paintings and prints in the 18th and early 19th centuries show these more elaborate designs being worn as men's cravats.  The Nordiska Museet handkerchief is thought to be a snuff handkerchief, as seen in this portrait from the Museum of Fine Arts Boston.  This handkerchief will suit your 18th and 19th century personas.
